Summary
The pilot episode of "Supernatural" opens with the events of November 1983 in Lawrence, Kansas.  Mary Winchester, the mother of two young sons, Sam and Dean, is killed by an unknown supernatural force and her husband John is forced to raise the two boys alone, turning them into a family of "hunters".  We cut to 22 years later where Sam has left the life of hunting for demons and spirits to study law at Stanford University.  He's happily living with his girlfriend Jessica and about to interview for law school when Dean shows up unexpectedly seeking his help in finding their missing father.  Sam and Dean travel to Jericho, California, John Winchester's last known whereabouts, where they work to find their father and uncover the mystery of a string of young men gone missing over a span of 20 years.

Webmasters' Thoughts

Hoppy says, "As pilot episodes go, this is a really entertaining one.  The Woman in White mystery is fairly unoriginal, but that's not important.  What's really important is the setup of the Winchester back story, the relationship between Sam and Dean, and the animosity Sam has towards their father and the life of a hunter.  It's a fantastic starting point for what is to come in the rest of the season, and the brotherly chemistry between Jensen and Jared is perfect right from the beginning, unlike other shows where it takes more time for the lead actors to find their chemistry.  Also, watching it when it premiered, you just knew something would have to happen to get Sam back into the hunting life, but it didn't make the twist at the end any less shocking.  Lastly, watching this after seeing the rest of the season really makes you notice the difference between Jeffrey Dean Morgan's portrayal of John before Mary's death, and John after Mary's death.  In the Lawrence flashback, he's just a sweet cuddly dad character, and when we see him again in later episodes, he's much darker and more intense, completely different from how we first see him."
