HOOK MAN
Episode(s): 1x07 - Hook ManLocation Sighted: Ankeny, Iowa
On The Show: Like the urban legend we first catch a glimpse of the Hook Man as he attacks a young couple who is making out in a car and kills the young man. Dean and Sam make their way to Iowa and follow up on some research. They find out the spirit of the Hook Man is Jacob Karns. They also find that he was buried in Old North Cemetery, in an unmarked grave. As Dean goes to locate Karns' resting place, Sam keeps an eye on Lori's house (the young girl in the attack).
Dean eventually finds the grave and burns the remains of Karns. In the meantime we get a reprise of another attack by the Hook Man, this time it's Lori's Dad. Sam and Dean then come to the conclusion that Jacob Karns is latching on to Lori, punishing people for her. Even though Dean burned everything in the coffin, the hook is the thing that needs to be destroyed. However, since then it has been reforged into something else, which means they need to burn any and all silver objects locacted at the church where the hook eventually ended up.
During their "burning" process, the Hook Man appears once again and Sam notices the chain around Lori's neck. He grabs it and throws it to Dean who puts it in the fire. The Hook Man stops with his hook in the air, and it starts to melt along with the rest of his body.
The Myth Behind the Show: Hook Man or The Hook, is a classic example of an urban legend. The story goes that a young couple is parked at the local Lovers' Lane. The place was dark and desolate so the guy parks the car, turns the lights off, and puts on the radio. There is some light music on the radio, and the two lovers begin making out. Suddenly, the music stops as an announcer cuts in. A dangerous murderer had just escaped from the state insane asylum, which just happened to be nearby. The one distinguishing and disturbing feature was a hook that the murderer had in place of one of his hands.
The girl becomes rather distraught and asks to go home. The guy, who was not quite ready to go home, locked the doors and told her that they would be fine. She became more and more incessant and continued pushing him away. He eventually gave in and punched the gas. They tore out of the parking lot and sped home. He didn't say a single word the entire way home. When he pulls up to her house, she gets out of the car. As she went to close the door, she began screaming uncontrollably. The guy jumped out of the car and ran around to the other side to see what was causing the commotion. There, hanging on the door handle was a bloody hook.
It is not explained why anyone, mad though they be, would use their hook hand rather than their functional hand to manipulate objects, or why a person would be allowed to keep a hook for a hand in an insane asylum.
A school of thought is presented with this story. There is a possibility that the murderer in question (The Hook) may be a sexually motivated killer. This is quite simply because it would be incredibly difficult to obtain self gratification (masturbation) with the lack of a functionable hand. Also, it would be quite painful as well, which may explain the blood on the hook.
So, with no repression for his unspeakable biological urges he may find it necessary to mutilate others to find relief for his tragic celibacy. Therefore, he may very well be a sexually motivated killer
